InkTree

This is a tree in our back garden, hanging off the cliff. It seems to have been struck by lightning at some time because only these interesting bits are left. To me, it’s a good example of Wabi Sabi – it’s scraggly, gnarly and definitely dead. But beautiful.

I love it. I think it’s gorgeous and interesting to look at. Very rarely is it actually empty. Sacred Kingfishers perch in there, and so do tiny Fantails, Silvereyes and Sparrows, musical Indian Minahs and pairs of Rose-Ringed Parakeets.

Plus, it makes a great subject for a bamboo pen and ink drawing. I made the bamboo pen myself, so it has a fairly think nib, but it’s great to sketch with. It gives a feeling of freedom and just playing around. Will definitely use it again!
